Civic theatre gets desperate facelift

The Townsville City Council has confirmed this week that tenders on the $10 million facelift to the civic theatre will commence in the coming months.

The facelift will include the removal of asbestos from the building as part of the upgrade.

Patrons attending the cultural hub during works will not be disrupted.

Councillor Colleen Doyle, Chairman of the Community and Cultural Committee said, “Stage 1A due to begin in September, would have limited impact on patrons and shows.”

The theatre has been servicing patrons to the premier cultural facility since its opening nearly 40 years earlier in 1978.

The arts facility offers performances in dance, music, opera, comedy and drama from major companies including local, national and international artists.

“The work is necessary and we appreciate the public’s patience, Ms. Doyle said.

As part of the Stage 1A works, the upgrade will include the theatre electrical network, overhauling toilets and car parks, fixing an access ramp, updating the external facade and basement.

The Stage 1B works are scheduled to begin first thing in 2018.

Townsville has a strong theatre culture represented by the Full Throttle Theatre Company, Props Youth Theatre Company ( an arm of Full Throttle) the Little Theatre Company, Townsville Music Theatre Company and Theatre iNQ and the North Queensland Opera and Music Theatre.
